frau

i forgot to connect the battery in my old Polaroid Land Camera, so the 'foto' was just a black square... grrrrrrrrrrrrr- so i just scratched this image with a paper clip! waste not, want not.

polaroid woodcut 1

actually this is a Polaroid back, which i stuck on a newspaper then peeled off later. i find the real transfers work better on slick/magazine paper, but this came out rather interesting. especially seen big- as i scanned it at 1200dpi

experiments in switzerland

i'm not sure if these should be categorized as artwork or foto-work as they are both. the top two black and whites are actually shots i made w/a digital camera of scrap paper on newspapers i was throwing out. i played w/them in Photoshop and they came out looking like woodcuts [to me]- which is a very swiss art form- i think blown up poster size they will be tres cool.

the two shots below are of some things i scanned then worked with in Photoshop. again... seen "large scale" they are very detailed and very much like abstract art. i really like the textures and rough stuck bits... which are not really visible in these small 'web' sized images. i only have them done as large prints for exhibits.

as "old school" [a purist] as i am about photography, i do enjoy alternative prcesses, and chopping up/mixing up things i've either shot or scanned in photoshop.

doug duffey painting in new orleans

these should probably have been posted in foto-mondo. this is a shot of me painting in my "studio room" in my house @ 4000 dumaine, new orleans, in the early 90s.

i'm not sure what happened to this huge painting i was working on [over 6 feet long] in this foto. i was doing a whole voodoo and totem series... not only as art but as a security system. i'd prop them up in the long hallway [that ran the length of my house] to deter anyone from breaking in. i also hung voodoo dolls in the windows, had a cow skull on a table by the window, and left the classical music station playing all the time. too scary for the thugs.

detail from one of my totem paintings [circa 1991]; these were done on boards- using white and black enamel paint.

st. francis

found this little "saint francis" head on the street [carrolton] in new orleans, walking back from buying groceries. i've had it for years.
i did a series of webcam shots... using a cheap webcam [one of those 'eye' looking things] i'd set up, i shot vignettes with the it. i'd use various things that were laying around: in this one is an old rusted iron, and old papers, fake flowers, the saint head, etc. this is one from the series of many! cant decide if it should be categorized as a foto or not... if so... it's in the wrong blog

that insect spirit

a small scanned version of a big collage done in NYC in the mid to late 90s. i'd just come back from Brussels, where i'd had 'carpel tunnel' surgery on my hand and was staying with my friend mary in brooklyn heights. i was getting antsy, from doing nothing, so began chopping up her magazines when she was at work to make collages [even though i was NOT supposed to be using my hand!]. this is one from the NYC series/book.

don't get too high

a small collage done in Holland in 1993- from one of my small portable collage books. i've actually scanned these small collages at very hi resolution, thinking i would do enormous prints, poster sized. i still might do it.

larry 100W

this was done in the 80s before computers and scanners as we know them. i had a foto of my friend "crazy larry" in a shirt that had light bulbs and 100W all over it. i took it to kinko's and copied/enlarged it in B&W ; then i took it home and 'colored' it with pastels, and then went back to kinko's and had them copy it on their brand new color copier. this however is not the color copy [which i gave to larry] but a scan of the original pastel colored xerox copy.

polaroids of paintings

the polaroids do not show the true colors- and when i scan them they change color even more. all these paintings were done when i was living in new orleans [the last time: circa 1987 through 1992] - before i began my european sojourns and collage frenzies

wasp nests and locusts

i have that certain southern eccentric habit of saving locust skins, turtle shells, wasp nests, bones, dead flowers, etc. these were some 'remains' i scanned and photoshopped.
