PHOTOMONTAGE AND RANT- SEPTEMBER 2012

i have been doing 'real time' drawings, making short videos, the last week +; since CMA [one of the many banes of my existence] has been off before Isaac; it goes out if one of the cats fart. but i have been enjoying doing the drawings; i take sketchbooks with me to doctors & hospital appointments- and have traded in my ritual of journal writing EVERY morning [since "aint nothin' goin' on but the rent" gwen guthrie] for drawing when i have my morning coffee and smokes ritual.

did a lot of mardi gras, carnival, halloween, hospitals, cafe, bar, street scenes, erotica, and tres "under ground/unter welt" stuff. some way too risque for funreaux. visual memoirs of my past lives; as errol flynn wrote "my wicked wicked ways"  have considered putting the originals online and selling them all off, [after i scan copies for myself] since many are 6x9, and 8x11ish; big enough to go into a priority mail envelope. BUT i am also doing as much work as i can, to draw from "the best of the best" [hi beege and pifou] of new work, for my one man show in Switzerland in May 2013.

i was asked today via text [by herr arender] to do a piece for his Monster Show at the upcoming Art Crawl; and hopefully it will be cool enough by then for me to crawl. i thought about possibly using one of my BIG 'analog/real time' collages "lust auf luxus" which is very vampirish- BUT decided to do something new. considering it is election time, that in itself is a horror enough. as said, i had been doing drawings, but decided to stop [after about 100] and begin doing some photomontage. and here is a small version of what i did for the Monster Show today:

BEAST - PHOTOMONTAGE/DIGITAL COLLAGE- 11.75" X 36"- [C] 2012 DOUG DUFFEY
the above version which will be shown framed; will be 11.75x36"- [and yes is for sale] but, i also did a version that is 24x 73". that one will have to be a special order/'commission'.

i began this newest photomontage phase/edition with one titled "the death of anita berber" [after doing several drawings of the same title] who is my new favorite hero/heroin[e]- i knew of her from the Otto Dix painting, and her roles in films, most notably,"different from the others"- but she was the queen of obscene. absolutely scandalous. i have always said  that i WISHED i would have lived in BERLIN in the 1920s into 1930s- the Weimar era, pre-fascism. everything i have ever read about it, or seen in films, documentaires etc. it was the wildest place on earth [still is!!!] -and Anita was the queen of the scene. it's said when she died [at 29] she was surrounded by statues of the Virgin Mary, and syringes.

THE DEATH OF ANITA BERBER- PHOTOMONTAGE/DIGITAL COLLAGE- 20"X30"- [C] 2012 DOUG DUFFEY

since it's said one sees their life 'flash before their eyes' when dying, thus all the various multiple images of Anita. there is also the android woman from Metropolis [inside the rings] over which i superimposed an old time hypodermic syringe [whic is shaped like a cross] and the Virgin. Check it all out in the film "Legendary Sin Cities - Paris, Berlin & Shanghai"

“When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross” - Huey P Long [or Sinclair Lewis- or God knows whom]... One of my favorite quotes, that came to mind as i was doing new digital collages/aka photomontage- due to it being 'election year'. have done several socio political works this week, and this time- unlike during the Bush era, when i was afraid to post any of my anti W & co. protest artwork- i AM going to post some of it. during w's reign, if you said anything against that regime you were deemed unpatriotic and worse. however, it is MY opinion that one's patriotic duty is to question authority AND speak truth to power; protest songs, protest art, protests period!
thus, i have begun a few new pieces and i am certain more will come.

PREACHING TO THE CHOIR- PHOTOMONTAGE/DIGITAL COLLAGE- 20"X30"- [C] 2012 DOUG DUFFEY
GLAW-REE! that's about what it t.i.z.+ preaching to the choir [on both sides, to be fair] - i used a big photo of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir [hi crunchie] and the Tabernacle- but have Krugerands as columns, over the pipe organ, with gold coins as the "capital"s or finials; capital seems more fitting. there's also a few oil rigs and money and a nuclear plant- but it has to be seen larger to see all the details. again: layers on top of layers... sort of like a lot of the "untruths" i have heard were touted as gospel at the RNC. thank god i turned off cable last year, and only stream netflix and fandor to my tv via roku/wifi- so i do not have to watch anything i don't want to. i loathe commercial tv- and most domestic films totally suck. absolutely NO imagination, no plots etc. just the same blockbuster crap. so thank god for fandor & netflix [which is NOT as good as Fandor] AND internet archive & youtube, where i can download public domain complete films- and either burn them to dvd to watch on the tv- OR just watch them on my laptop. but back to this blog

G.O.P.= GREED ON PARADE- PHOTOMONTAGE/DIGITAL COLLAGE- 20"X30"- [C] 2012 DOUG DUFFEY
OKAY now we get to political protest. i never could understand how Ms Rice could be a republican- but i saw her on "Finding Your Roots" and she's 40% "caucasian"- maybe that explains it? after the incident with the newscaster @ the RNC [black woman being thrown peanuts and told "this is how we feed the animals" by some jerks] i figured i wasnt too far off the mark by putting the 'colored served in rear' - we have NOT come that far. and everyone knows the GO is filled with gays -maybe more than the Dems- "Log Cabin Republicans"???? mmm hmmm...  and rumor has it Karl, the evil genius behind both W campaigns and dastardly doings, is "one of the club"... [one of the specialized ones]  jes saying. let me put a big LOL here, so i don't get sued. big brother IS watching us.

MITT BUSH- PHOTOMONTAGE/DIGITAL COLLAGE- 20"X30"- [C] 2012 DOUG DUFFEY

it seem to me that Mitt is just W in "duh" face; as if anyone could be more 'duh' than W. those goofy looks and smitty smith no neck turn arounds and such; like a BAD stand up comic...only i ain't laughing. i don't know what planet he and his posse are from, but they ain't from nowhere near MY world...or my reality. His suits probably cost more than my car. THEY seem to be completely out of touch with reality as it is, and every day normal Americans- or maybe i am! maybe 20 years in Europe has put me out of touch; but nah, i have always thought the way i think- i was a Hippie, after all. even though i was never REALLY political, [except that i couldn't stand Nixon or Reagan or W's daddy] i  became political when W ran for office. BTW i don't see what all the worship of Reagan was about. i didn't see that he did anything except deregulate every damned thing; i dont see that he stopped the cold war. Nancy running to her psychic before he could even break wind, much less make any decision; hollywood hoodoo in the white house. lawd hab mussy.

PAUL [RYAN] CHENEY- PHOTOMONTAGE- [C]2012 DOUG DUFFEY
which brings us to my run for office. but, after this rant, i'm too tired to even talk about running just now...

DOUG DUFFEY FOR PRESIDENT- LETS FIX THIS MESS
I KNOW it's RATHER early yet- and, i don't care what party you're in or choose- get the facts from BOTH sides- read, do research, [libraries have the latest magazines and computers if you don't!] go online and find out what's what. make intelligent decisions based on facts, and on knowledge before you VOTE! this ain't like winning no football game... this is your life!

PAPER DANCE- VIDEO

A video made up of still photographs shot during collage making sessions in Switzerland in January 17-23, 2009; most of it was paper left over from collages, which i piled up, arranged & rearranged, and shot as photos; Thinking the white strips to be like "yarrow" sticks for I Ching, they look even moreso now, as moving images. I also like the fact that "dance in photography" and "the holy land" [das heilege land] keep popping in and out. Music: "Em Echo" created and recorded in Switzerland January 1, 2012. Video created August 12, 2012 Monroe, Louisiana. All images and sounds created by DOUG DUFFEY [c]2012 DOUG DUFFEY- "Em Echo" published by DOUG DUFFEY MUSIC BMI [P]2012 DOUG DUFFEY

DOUG DUFFEY/LOUISIANA AMERICANA

poster from the exhibit

DOUG DUFFEY/LOUISIANA AMERICANA
With this year marking the 200th anniversary of Louisiana becoming a state, I thought, for this show, exhibiting various images I had captured from around the state was in order.
I have been photographing my home, Louisiana, for almost half a century. I have many photos from all over the state; but have chosen to focus primarily on the Northeast Louisiana region and New Orleans, where I lived for many years. There are also a few shots from other regions in the state, as well as a few from Natchez and Vicksburg, which fit into the ‘Americana’ category.
When selecting photos for this exhibit, I was also thinking of all the photographers of the FSA, during 1935–44 who went across America photographing the horrors of the great depression- especially in the destitute rural deep south [which, in some places, has NOT changed all that much] and how those images have stuck in my head forever; influencing my own work. I have, for as long as I can remember, been attracted to, if not obsessed with photographing deserted home places, shotgun houses, hand painted signs, folk art type things; rusted and falling down barns and abandoned buildings, junk stores, etc. Old wood, brick and rust excite me, when I see it; and I feel I have to capture it before it vanishes. In Louisiana rust, abandonment and decay are everywhere... but not forever
I find beauty in the funkiness and eccentricity here; which is often overlooked. It is a major part of what I love to capture as a photographer: the beautiful, and the not so beautiful, the humorous, quirky, eccentric and the sad. I’ve always found Louisiana to be tragically beautiful; beautiful with an underlying sadness, mystery and magic about it; overflowing with majesty and soul, apparent in a lot of everyday things that we might overlook, not notice, or scarcely notice; things that we have become too accustomed to, which surround us; that we would see nowhere else… remnants of ages that are perishing, fading, quickly disappearing... either by man made or natural disasters.
General Electric used to say, “Progress is our most important product,” It isn’t. When I see the devastation, annihilation, pollution and desecration: like forests being razed to put in a strip mall or a gated community, small towns abandoned and left to ruin; in some cases whole ‘city’ blocks leveled- it angers me. I try to capture the images of things I KNOW will not be here much longer; which, I think, at times, IS my 'raison d'ĂȘtre... to preserve the memory of what I can, while I can, for future generations though my photographs.

Doug Duffey was born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1950. He was inducted into the Louisiana hall of Fame in 2001- and the National Blues Hall of Fame in 2009. Best known as a singer, songwriter, musician, performer, he is also a serious multi genre visual artist; mediums being collage, drawing, painting, photography and mixed media. He began his musical career, performing professionally, at the age of 14 and has become an international entertainer and recording artist, releasing 7 CDs of original material. He has promoted Louisiana music and culture in Europe and beyond for the past 20 years; performing in international festivals, music clubs, and has performed 2 different times for the American Embassy/Ambassador in Moscow, Russia. As with his music, he began creating art at a very early age. He has drawn and painted since childhood; began making collage in the 1960s; taught himself photography: from camera basics to how to develop film and make prints. Preferring film [and vintage cameras] to digital, he often utilizes both in his work. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Louisiana [New Orleans, Shreveport, Monroe, Bastrop] and Europe. He is a member of the 10/20/40 Art Group. He has resided and worked between Louisiana and Switzerland for the past 20 years.
